If you’re looking for a bit of European history Birdie style then look no further than this unusual, likely one-of-a-kind pin from Germany. Featuring a Raptor (likely an Eagle) within a seashell, the pin has a lot going on with a scroll below, a star above and intricate detail throughout. But wonder doesn’t stop there – you’ll also find seed pearls within the bird’s wings, a ruby or garnet in his eye and an aquamarine or topaz stone in the star. The pin was crafted around 1870 and is sterling silver with gold plating on the shell, while the scroll is, I believe, copper. Measures 1.25” long and 1 1/8” wide with a simple hook clasp on the back and is unmarked. The star is missing one point but aside from that the pin is in great condition – not bad for its 140+ years! The symbolism within the pin cannot be denied, wish the bird could talk and share a secret or two…… He seems to be sharing quite well with a vintage Cockatoo bud vase available at: www.antiquebeak.com, item #ab5870.
